The Duality of Me at the Art House

Smell flowers as if you were a puppy smelling the world for the first time. Protest the War in Iraq. Recognize that there is a strong racial divide in this country between green and all the other colors. Acknowledge the fact that classical musicians were the first “sell-outs”. Understand that Dr. Seuss was a genius. Understand that Ray Charles was a genius. Be thankful for what you have got. Always believe in a higher power than what you understand. Stay humble. Squeeze both firm and flabby body parts often and with enthusiasm. Re-arrange the furniture in your house so as to confuse any blind ghosts that you might have roaming around your property. Call your mother. Have awkward, yet meaningful and important phone conversations with your father. Only complain to the people who love you, lie to everybody else. Follow your dreams. Always bet on black. Follow the yellow brick road only if you have not had more than three drinks in the last three hours. Contemplate the meaning of what it is to be American. Fear for the future.  Get a tattoo that means nothing to you, but something to everybody else. Acknowledge that your penis is not the biggest penis in the history of mankind. Wonder why the woman stays with you, when you don’t make any money and the sex isn’t always spectacular. Remember to look both ways when crossing the street. Drink water. Forgive the people who have hurt your feelings. Hold a grudge against those people who have wasted your time. Fight the power. Let love rule. Read a book. Do something nice for somebody who you don’t like. Chop garlic with your imagination. Eat Tofu on a Tuesday in Tibet with Tiny Tim, then, take a ten minute break for some me time.

Rain drops on the window, smeared vision of winter, dripping down summer screens left attached out of a desire to be lazy. Tapping drops provide rhythm to the afternoon while bodies of woman and dog lay snuggled on the couch.

Breathing underneath blankets woven out of past generations they constitute family. Piled together just a room away on a winter afternoon of lounging, as though this day could never change even with the movement of the sun across the sky making shadows grow long. Water runs past this desk into the ocean a few blocks away, floating to parts unknown. There probably will not be any gnomes traveling as companions with the drip drops underneath umbrellas that are waiting for a slice of the sun.

I love my Mom and Dad

And the world

And my Dog

I hope there is not a war

I hope the world never goes away.

I liked hot dogs

Now I’m eight

And I hate hot dogs

There was not a chance of war

And there might be a war!

It seems that only children skip

Spryness of youth

A miracle from a distance

Like a feather

Or a rock skimming the water

Captivated by carelessness

Random acts of living

Limitless like imagination

Hop-skip, step on a crack

Sing songs of joy

Heedless of listeners

Skeptical of strangers

The unknown breaks the chain

One ring around one rosie

All others fall down

Giggling all the way

Home.

Elmo still tickles the funny bone

While Wockets his in pockets

Any Rudy Clint smiles from the Cabbage Patch

Books become castles

Or hop scoth path

Followed by Muppets

Its still not easy being green

Especially when lady pigs know kung fu

And the Yellow Brick Road turns red

A balloon floating away

Endless joy on a cloud

A puff of dragon

Concealing Luke’s skywalking

If only in his youth

When Chairy beckoned at the end of each day

With a final good night to the moon.
