A blizzard is a magical thing for many children and those who are young at heart. As snow falls and responsibilities dwindle with the lack of travel options, there is a certain sense of freedom that is derived from being trapped in the home.

As school age kids and a few fortunate adults know, snow can be a bonus holiday. Although I do remember growing up in Vermont having a teacher explain to me that every snow we had meant a day in the summer that we had to be in school. This point was lost on me as I hoped and prayed for a one day respite from the grind of school.

Snow days are for Snowmen and snowball fights, sledding and if you are lucky enough even skiing. All of these activities as well as ice skating are more enjoyable on a snow day.

It is my sincere attempt to begin a new chapter in the writing career of Middlepoet. I am planning on a return to poetry. Although, I never really left. Somewhere along the way in my writing career, I fear that at times I have forgotten to keep the writing basic, in short to be poetic.

As a writer I have at times gotten away from what poetry should be, simplistic. Prose has made brief appearances in my poems, which although sometimes not a bad thing, can be a bit of a distraction. As a result, I have had to go back to the basics. I have been reading Shel Silverstein to refamiliarize myself with the beauty of the simple thought, the simple story.

I have found a great sense of reward in my attempt to return to metaphors and slant rhymes. Part of my poetic rebirth is my new found love for micro fiction. Essentially many of the “poems” I was writing were in fact works of micro fiction. I thoroughly enjoy the concept of telling a story in just a few hundred words, as is the case with micro fiction in prose and with poetry in verse, but it is important for me artistically to maintain a distance between the two.

Perhaps, this moment in my journey as a writer is an epiphany, perhaps the early stages of a manifesto. Perhaps this is nothing more than a continualization of a writer 3who has figured something out that is not such a mystery in the first place.

As the New York Jets begin their off season, the sports landscape goes into a bit of a doldrum for this poet. Sure, there is the Winter Olympics, but there is no doubt that NBC will manage to suck all of the fun out of such exciting sports as curling and the biathlon.

Some might think of basketball as the great outlet for the nomadic sports fan. However, as far as college goes, there is March Madness, and then, well, there isn’t much else. The NBA can be exciting, especially when you are a Lakers fan such as yours truly. But, considering games of import aren’t really even played until April, there just is not that much appeal.

This leaves us with baseball. America’s pastime. Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, Major League and all those other great movies. Casey at the Bat was my favorite poem for the longest time. Okay, so perhaps it still is.

Baseball is a marvelously relaxing cerebral sport in so many ways. Yet, the game in its essence is easy to pick up. Explainging baseball to somebody from England is much easier to do than explaining American football.

But lets be even more honest about the situation. There is no better way to tell the civic pride a city has than by how it feels about its baseball team. So it is with this spirit in mind that I slouch my way through the next few weeks, waiting for pitchers and catchers to report, and The Boys of Summer to take the field.

Here it is, the official Middlepoet list of the ten greatest rappers of all time. Although there is an east coast bias here, I really just couldn’t come up with any west coast lyricists other than Snoop Dogg and Tupac who belong on the list. I have Jay-Z at number one because his old stuff could be new stuff today and it would sell.

1. Jay-Z

As previously stated, the music is timeless.

2. Notorious B.I.G.

Classic NYC sound.

3. Eminem

Perhaps the greatest rhyme schemes of all.

4. Tupac

For some reason, I think he is very over hyped.

5. Nas

Illmatic, one of the greatest albums of all time. Of all time!

6. Lil Wayne

Dude is insane. Metaphorical genius.

7. Andre 3000

Far out funky magic.

8. Mos Def

The definition of backpack rap.

9. Rakim

The legend.

10. Snoop Dogg

The best of the West.

Honorable mention: Cee-lo, Chuck D, Q-Tip, Wyclef, Ice-T, Ice Cube, Zach De La Rocha, Method Man, Black Thought, Big Boi, Buckshot Shorty.
